Today, Egypt has established a market based, liberalized and open economy that displays significant strengths in software, tourism, feeder industries, ready-made garments, cement, agricultural products, and many other industry sectors.
Egypt, with a population of sixty two million people, at the crossroads of Africa and Asia, is a gateway for business in the Arab world, Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean Basin. Though a large market, many challenges are in play. Annual income per capita is US $600 which constitutes a low purchasing power.
Consequently, the market is a price conscious market. Still the Egyptian market has yet to be fully exploited, with successful reforms, Egypt has transformed from the world's most indebted nation in 1986, to one that is joining the emerging markets of the world.
The Egyptian government has put in place fundamental changes that allow its economy to integrate with the mainstream of the world economy. Some of these measures were the elimination of restrictions on foreign exchange lowering tariff gradually in compliance with the GATT, tax havens on projects located in industrial free zone cities.
